Window Trim- What a Difference

October 10, 2015 By Lynn 2 Comments

I am unsure why home builders don’t trim out windows? It elevates a room SO much! And it is pretty simple and doesn’t cost much to do.

DIY Window Trim- simple steps

Here’s the before picture of Ruby’s room. It is a tiny little room. I was worried about how it would feel with a full size dresser, twin bed, and all her other “stuff” in here. I think painting the walls and ceiling, along with trimming out the window and adding molding to the ceiling actually made the room feel bigger!

If you have craftsman style home, trimming out windows is extra easy. All you need is flat primed MDF molding from a hardware/lumber store. I bought the 4 inch wide boards for the sides and 6 inch boards for the top and bottom. You will want to measure out your window- measure twice, cut once! Measure so that after the side boards are up on the wall – the bottom and top pieces will extend 1 more inch on each side (like in the picture above).  Start with your bottom board, level it before attaching it with your nail gun. I used 2″ long nails for this project.

After the bottom piece was level and secured to the wall I added the side pieces. Make sure you use your level all along the way. Lastly, I added the top board. This is a project you can do alone and bust out in about an hour. The part that will take the most time is now caulking and painting the window frame. To make your window trim look professional and finished you will want to caulk the inside and outside of the frame AND fill all the little nail holes. Using painters tape you can now paint it white to match the trim in your house and be done! Woohoo! One window down! 😉

And toss the boob light….this Pottery Barn Kids scalloped light is so stink’n cute! I also trimmed out the ceiling using a similar trim, it was just a bit smaller, about 2.5 inches thick. This was not crown molding, just flat wall molding like what is on the windows.

The walls are painted with a Behr paint color called Mayfair White and the ceiling is called Galloway.

Window moulding definitely elevates the room, like you said. It not only makes the window stand out more, but I think it makes the wall look bigger. Ruby’s room ended up really cute! I love the wall color!

When were moved into our home the basement was not finished, but it was partially framed. One of those framed walls was a little funky. It did not line up with the other “walls” it would meet up with. I wasn’t sure how to make it work with the room behind it. At the same […]
