The Proposal

September 10, 2015 By Lynn 4 Comments

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the day I was married. I’m having some major nostalgic moments today.  I was looking through pictures last night and found pictures from the first time Devan and I talked to each other – at a Halloween carving party and we both were assigned the job of cooking pumpkin seeds. I was so nervous! Then I looked through dating pictures until I got to our engagement pictures. Well, hold up not our engagement pictures, the pictures of when we got engaged- the day Devan proposed.  I knew he was going to pop the question some time, just not exactly when it would happen.  I thought this would be a fun story to share today. Before I start the story it’s important to note that we were planning to buy a dog together and we had been researching bull mastiff puppies AND we had joked about naming it Bob Sebastian Beefcake.

Story time!

One really beautiful Sunday in San Diego Devan’s family decided to take a trip down to Del Mar beach for picnic after church. I thought that a picnic at the beach was pretty awesome, we packed up all we needed and headed to the beach. Devan’s sister was in town with her one year old, his best friend decided to come along, his parents, his brother and his wife….it was a regular family party at the beach.

We were all sitting down eating our food when Devan got up to use the restroom. I thought nothing of it. He came back and we continued to eat. A few minutes later a cute couple came walking down the pathway by the blanket we were sitting on.  They had a cute little bull mastiff puppy with them.  Devan made a comment to me about how that looked like a bull mastiff puppy, I looked and thought oh how cute and popped a few grapes in my mouth. Then Devan did something he never does, he yelled out the couple and asked what kind of dog they had?! They replied bull mastiff and then Devan asked them what it’s name was…okay I thought he must be really excited about seeing this dog breed.

They said to Devan, why don’t you look for yourself. The puppy ran up to Devan licking his face, he looked at the collar and in a surprised sounding voice he said, “Lynn you gotta see this!”

I was SUPER confused why he would be so excited about this strangers dog.

Okay, I scooted over and peeked at the collar – Bob Sebastian Beekcake. I am now wondering what the heck is going on?!

Even more confused now, Devan asked me to look at the other dog tag.

“Lynn, will you marry me.” I just started laughing!! SO HARD! How fantastic! Some one quickly pulled the dog aside and Devan got on one knee, pulled out the ring, said some romantical stuff that I can’t totally remember and asked me to marry him.

Of course I said, YES!”

Next to getting married and having each of our children, this was one of the happiest days of my life. Don’t ever want to forget it.

Man, we look like babies!

The couple with the dog was Devan’s Aunt and Uncle who I had never met. 🙂

A few months later Devan and I were married in the San Diego Temple on September 10, 2015.

I am continually grateful for Devan and our marriage. I can honestly say he has helped me become a better person. He is constantly encouraging me to go after my dreams. He is my best friend.

“If you want something to last forever, you treat it differently. You shield it and protect it. You never abuse it. You don’t expose it to the elements. You don’t make it common or ordinary. If it ever becomes tarnished, you lovingly polish it until it gleams like new. It becomes special because you have made it so, and it grows more beautiful and precious as time goes by.”  –F. When were moved into our home the basement was not finished, but it was partially framed. One of those framed walls was a little funky. It did not line up with the other “walls” it would meet up with. I wasn’t sure how to make it work with the room behind it. At the same […]
