The Trash to Treasure Room

July 2, 2014 By Lynn 2 Comments

When we moved into this house I had a chance to use all the things I had been saving up for Miss Charlie’s room.  Art and furniture I had been holding on to for years would know have a home.  It was big girl room time!

Almost everything is this room is from a thrift store or I bought it on craigslist or at a garage sale.   Most of these items have been sitting in my garage/basement for a year or more.  I like to just buy things I love-  that I know have potential to be pretty again.   If I really love it, I know it will go with everything else I have been saving.

It all started with this crewel art work I found at a thrift store in San Diego.   I loved it and grabbed the instant I saw it.  I snatched it up like someone was going to steal it from me.  Ha!

I just thought it was beautiful and funky….just the way I like my things.  :)

The chair was a craiglist find.  I drove an hour for it….the lady thought I was nuts.  It was nasty, I can’t lie.  Most people would have thrown in in the trash.  I loved the sea shell shaped back and knew with a good cleaning and some new fabric it would be perfect.  I painted the arms and legs and then set her off to be reupholstered.   The night stand in this picture is from my Grandma, she gave it to me.  Score!

The headboard is probably my best garage sale find to date.  It is from India and was starting to fall apart.  I bought it for $30, reinforced the wood on the back, and painted it.  The detail in the carvings is beautiful!!  It was another find that most people would have gave up on, but I just loved it and couldn’t walk away from it.  My movers actually broke one of the legs, but I was determined to fix it and use it in this room.   I cried a little when the leg snapped, shhh. 😉

I love that this room is made up of thrift store finds and things no one else wanted!  This desk was on it’s way to the garbage, but a friend saved it and drove it to Utah from San Diego for me.  Another Score!

The little details in this room make me happy.   Some of the art work was in my mom’s room when she was a baby.  Like that little flower painting, it was done by a Great Aunt on my mom’s side.   The picture below of the cross stitch has hung above my mom’s crib, my bed as a little girl, and now over my daughters bed.  Three generations!!  These are the things that make a room special.

In my book furniture shouldn’t be matchy matchy- the more funky and fun- the better.

This little bird pillow happened one Sunday afternoon.  I needed one last thing for the bed.   My scrap fabric turned out to be a pretty dang cute little bird.

Every girl needs a fancy mirror to play dress-up with.  Check out the fun teal white-washed one in Ruby’s room HERE.

The dresser was painted with homemade chalk paint, it was a KSL find.  The cats were found in Seattle at an antique store.  The Charlie letters are from The Land of Nod.   The animal art work and the animal bin are from Home Goods.  The frame with the flower photograph I cut out with my jig-saw just to fit this space.  The cherry blossom photo is one I took last spring.  You can download a free copy of the picture HERE.  I am sharing a few free prints here on my blog.

I hope these pictures have inspired you in some way!  Now that I have the two girls rooms done I guess I better start on a cool boy room for my son.  :)

Stay Tuned!

I love these colors together so much! I have recently gotten into thrifting and Craigslist myself, and I’ve scored some pretty cool finds as well. Thanks for sharing!

When were moved into our home the basement was not finished, but it was partially framed. One of those framed walls was a little funky. It did not line up with the other “walls” it would meet up with. I wasn’t sure how to make it work with the room behind it. At the same […]
