The Evolution of a Dresser

February 22, 2016 By Lynn Leave a Comment

There are only a few pieces of furniture that have stayed with us through our four moves. Two of them are dressers. One is from Pottery Barn and the other is this thrifted vintage dresser. Where ever you find your furniture or whatever you pay for it- if you get a quality piece that is well made it will last you forever. Look for solid wood pieces, especially when you are shopping for a dresser. The body and drawers will last much longer.

Here she is in all her original glory. Gold trim and all. It was very pretty even though it’s a terrible picture. 🙂

I used my normal painting techniques for painting furniture. You can find those by clicking HERE.

I originally painted the dresser a baby blue for my daughter’s nursery. It turned out very cute.

When we moved this blue dresser got a few dings and was looking a little roughed up from the regular use of a spunky little girl. It needed another makeover…

My buddy Katie from @justaddsunshineinc was telling me how awesome BB Frosch paint powder is one day. She is always painting and doing beautiful projects, so I got online and bought myself a 4oz $10 can of the paint powder. I was nervous to try it, but I love the result!

I stripped just the top of my dresser with heavy duty spray paint stripper, scrapped all the paint off, then gave it a good sanding. I wanted the top to be raw wood, so there is no clear top coat or anything. I love the beautiful natural wood. I did have to sand it pretty good starting with a 100-120 sand papers on my orbital sander, then moved to a higher number (a finer grit) sand paper to smooth it out.  A 220 sand paper worked great to finish it up.

Then I started to paint the dresser with the BB Frosch paint powder mixed into a white Behr flat paint. The paint powder was SUPER easy to use and it was fast. I painted the whole dresser in about 3-4 hours.

Since painting this my sweet three year old has actually drawn on it with a red marker and a brown crayon….. (insert me ripping out my hair). I did NOT top coat any part of this dresser with wax or a polyurethane. I was regretting that choice a little after the “incident.” But! I used a “magic eraser” and thankfully it wiped both the marker and crayon right off.  NO damage done to the paint and no paint came off! I was kinda amazed that I didn’t have to grab paint and touch it up. I am sold on the BB Frosh now…if something can stand the test of time with my rough and tumble children, I am sold for life!

When were moved into our home the basement was not finished, but it was partially framed. One of those framed walls was a little funky. It did not line up with the other “walls” it would meet up with. I wasn’t sure how to make it work with the room behind it. At the same […]
