Summer Sewing- Wrights Pattern Review

July 14, 2014 By Lynn Leave a Comment

If you saw my Instagram post you are probably wondering why I could call my sweet mother a “sneaky dirty dawg” Ha!  Well, she is sneaky because she bought this pattern and left it on my work desk.  No biggie?  Well, this woman has been trying to teach me to sew for years!!  We used to fight about it…hahaha.  So dumb, I know.  I did take Sewing 101 in college and didn’t tell her for the first few weeks…silly normal mother-daughter stuff, right?! 🙂  She sews wedding dresses and such, she’s got mad skillz.

After spending a fun week visiting my house my mom quietly left this on my desk the day she flew back home to Seattle.  I think she has learned she has to be sly like this to get me to try things out.  I was half-way through the second dress when I realized she left it on my desk on purpose, I burst out laughing.  She got me! I WAS SEWING! haha….

Well, I had fun sewing these, SAY WHAAA? Yes I had so much fun that I made FOUR!  I only have two daughters by the way…

I even got adventurous and added a sash the ties in the back and a cute little bib in front- trimmed with lace.

I sewed the lace on to the bib fabric right sides in, then opened it up and top stitched.  Yes, I was even top stitching… that woman…. 😉

When sewing the front skirt to the top- like in the Wright pattern instructions- I layered on the bib, so I was doing that all in one step.  I added the sash at the after that,  in between the bib step and the next step.  I ironed it and top stitched it on just to the front of the dress.

I would have to say that if you want to try to sew a cute summer dress for little people AND you are a beginner, this pattern is perfect.  Wright did a great job laying this out for the confused beginner like me!  The hard part will be picking out some stink’n cute fabric.  My favorite place to buy fabric is from Hawthorne Threads.com  They have an awesome selection and really great prices.  I found the mermaid fabric and the solid colors at JoAnn Fabrics.

I hope you will try sewing sooner than later- and no be stubborn like me 🙂  It really can be very rewarding.  My six year old daughter now thinks I am the coolest mom around for making her a dress.

When were moved into our home the basement was not finished, but it was partially framed. One of those framed walls was a little funky. It did not line up with the other “walls” it would meet up with. I wasn’t sure how to make it work with the room behind it. At the same […]
